CORE JOB SUMMARY The University of Miami Miller School of Medicine (MSOM) is committed to supporting diversity, equity and inclusion as defined by our Office of Diversity, Inclusion and Community Engagement.
Our Task Force on Racial Justice (TFRJ) was launched in 2020 to promote racial equity by advocating for a racially diverse and inclusive environment at the Miller School while equipping students to lead diverse and inclusive teams.
The TFRJ has put forth recommendations and best practices that will guide the work of the Deans Diversity Council aimed at empowering strategic action teams to implement the short, medium- and long-term recommendations.
The Deans Diversity Council continues to monitor our progress and updates our racial justice website, which showcases and provides accountability for the ongoing work.
Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) is one of the Miller Schools top priorities supported by the Dean, Provost, President, and the Chair of the Board of Trustees of the University of Miami.
Candidates for this position will meet the requirements for appointment as associate professor or higher rank in the Miller School of Medicine.
Reporting to the Dean, the Senior Associate Dean (SAD) for Diversity, Inclusion and Community Engagement provides strategic leadership in developing and implementing programs and initiatives that advance these values for all members of the Miller School including students, faculty, and staff.
The SAD will be a leader, advisor, advocate, catalyst for change, and an institutional resource focused on infusing DEI into all programs and activities, tracking progress toward these goals, and communicating progress to an engaged community.
He/she will develop strategic initiatives to engage our local communities and enhance opportunities for students.
He/She will also supervise the Assistant Dean for Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement who is primarily focused on student climate and community pipeline programming and will lead the DEI team in collaboration with the office of Admissions.
CORE JOB FUNCTIONS The SAD:

Is a member of the Deans Senior Cabinet that makes strategic decisions on all aspects of the Miller School organizational priorities.

Acts as a key advisor and strategic partner to the Dean , particularly on issues regarding school climate.

Build s upon the strategic plan that has been developed by the Miller School, develops, and leads the implementation of the long-term vision and goals for diversity, equity, and inclusion; builds new DEI programs and training for students, faculty, staff, and is accountable for the results of those programs.

S erves as advisor and consultant regarding matters related to diversity and inclusion to the heads of all Clinical Departments and Centers and Institutes in partnership with the Dean.

Provides leadership in identifying outreach services and is responsible for representing the Miller School locally and nationally as a leader in diversity.

Partners with University of Miami leadership to further the DEI vision for the medical campus.

Leads the design and development of major medical school components and oversees the execution of these programs in partnership with other Senior team members.

Oversees the strategy for increasing effectiveness of outreach strategies for prospective students and revises application review process to increase diversity of the student classes.

Works with Associate Deans for Curriculum and S enior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs to create more inclusive classroom environments.

Plays leadership role among the University of Miami professional schools to push forward the campus-wide DEI strategic plan.

Maintains the appropriate level of scholarship to promote and advance the dissemination of DEI best practices and implementation strategies.

years of academic or professional background in diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Knowledge, Skills and Attitudes:

Expert oral and written communication skills, specifically as it relates to communicating to a variety of internal and external stakeholders about diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Demonstrated leadership experience in academic, corporate, and/or nonprofit organizations effectively working with historically underrepresented groups (Black, Latinx, Indigenous).

Demonstrated expertise building collaborations between academia, industrial and/or internal stakeholders across all functions.
Expert ability to work with dynamic and diverse group of faculty, staff, and students.

Expert influencing skills.
Proven ability to support and empower leaders who are less experienced in leading conversations about diversity and inclusion to build the schools capacity in equity leadership.

Managerial experience, both with direct reports and with cross-functional teams that do not have a direct, formal reporting structure.

Track record of program implementation, strategic planning, and managing across multiple important priorities.
DEPARTMENT SPECIFIC FUNCTIONS The SAD:

Collaborates with the Development team to fundraise to support DEI initiatives and secure scholarship funding for under-represented minority (URM) students.

Makes budget allocation decisions about scholarships and student programming in partnership with the Executive Dean for Education.

Plans, directs, and controls program budget and manages financial, HR, technical and other supporting resources.

Creates assessment system, tracks results of new programs, and communicates those results.
Based on assessment results, recommends changes to programs content, policies, and strategic goals accordingly.

Partners with Faculty Affairs and Human Resources to increase diversity in hiring.
Designs and implements talent management processes and systems to increase diversity.
